Hungarian students in Oulu
Oulu Vocational College hosted a group of twenty Hungarian students when they completed their on-the-job learning period in Oulu this autumn. Also the Finnish students had a chance to develop their language skills as well as other international competences by taking part in various activities organized for the guests. Here's two stories written by two Oulu Vocational College students who organized social events for the guests.
A TRIP TO VIRPINIEMI
In mid August we arranged a fieldtrip to Virpiniemi with the first year students of the international business and administration programme and our Hungarian guests. Our group was made up of about 30 students, two teachers from our school and two teachers from Hungarian school. The purpose of this trip was to make the Finnish students and the Hungarian students familiar with each other.
The Hungarian students and I jumped in the bus in front of Välkkylä student apartments and our trip was about to begin. Finnish students were already aboard and when I entered the bus I first saw a bunch of sleepy faces. Bus was pretty crowded but there were no complaints.
When we arrived in our destination we first had few ice-breakers and we split the group into a few smaller groups. We had to stay inside because the weather outside had gone bad and it had started raining.
After some time had gone one of our teachers and I went to prepare meal for everyone. My job was to take care of the fire making and grilling the sausages. Groups showed up a little early and I had my hands full with sausages but luckily everyone was helpful and patient. After eating and chatting it was time to head back inside.
This time activities got a bit more challenging because this time the groups started to compete in different activities such as traditional Finnish mölkky, shape creating game and paper airplane game. Points were counted and there was a sweet prize for the winning team. Everyone was happy and enjoyed to play in groups.
In the end the winner team was selected and after that some of the students took a stroll in woods to see the sea. After some time the bus arrived and everybody got in. This time it was different than in the morning; The bus was now more noisy and there were people chatting all around. So there's an evidence that our goal was reached!
Thank you for the trip, cheers,

BOWLING EVENT IN HEINÄPÄÄ
As our Hungarian guests had to leave Oulu 4.9.2008 on Thursday, we decided to arrange this bowling event 3.9.2008 in Heinäpää bowling alley. Nearly all of the Hungarians took part and there were over ten Finnish students from our school to guide them.
We had six bowling alleys and over thirty players so we had a lot to do when we made our teams and wrote everybodys names to the computers. Anyhow we successfully conquered the alleys and started bowling like weve never done it before!
We played intensely for about an hour and took a lot of nice photographs from the event.
Some of our Finnish students including me also took part to a hockey night 19 August 2008. We went to see how Oulun Kärpät plays ice hockey in Oulun Energia Areena. I heard that Hungarians liked it and we had plenty of fun there. Thanks to you, our most welcome guests from Hungary hope to see you again.
