Joel Manninen, an alumni of OSAO’s Restaurant and Catering Services programme, won a silver medal at the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition, held in Istanbul, Turkey, in April 2026. His coach during the competition was Esa Koppelo, Head of Department of Restaurant and Catering Services at OSAO.
The Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition is an international culinary competition for professional chefs under the age of 27, organised by the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. The competition brings together young chefs from different countries to demonstrate their professional skills in a competitive setting. In the 2026 competition, Canada won the gold medal and Hungary placed third.
Manninen graduated from OSAO in 2018 with a qualification in restaurant and catering services. During the competition in Turkey, he was coached and supported by Esa Koppelo, who also serves as the Finnish national competition director and works at OSAO as Head of Department of Restaurant and Catering Services.
The Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition has been organised internationally for several decades and is recognised for its high professional standards. In 2027, the competition will be held for the 50th time, marking its anniversary year. Manninen’s silver medal represents a significant international achievement for Finnish restaurant and catering expertise.
At OSAO, students have the opportunity to participate in skills competition activities during their studies, such as the Taitaja (Skills Finland) competitions. These competitions assess professional skills through practical work tasks. Successful competitors may progress from national competitions to international level and represent Finland in their field.
